Protomatic has added the Tsugami TMA8-III, an eight-axis CNC machining center, as manufacturers seek to balance precision on complex parts with the economics of small-batch production. The integrated turn-mill platform is designed to reduce setup errors and improve consistency, while extending high-performance machining to lower-volume runs.
The TMA8-III combines turning and milling on a single platform with eight-axis interpolation. The design reduces the number of fixturing changes required for complex geometries, limiting setup errors and improving consistency across production runs.
Advanced computer-aided manufacturing, or CAM, programming and simulation are central to the system. Superposition technology allows turning and milling operations to be linked seamlessly, and software validates toolpaths before cutting to reduce collision risk. The approach lowers the threshold for high-performance machining in prototype and small-to-medium batch work.
The machine is configured with a high-capacity main spindle and a faster sub-spindle, alongside a milling head with a broad B-axis range. Its maximum machining envelope is intended for small and medium-sized precision components.
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Main spindle | 8-inch chuck, 25 hp, 5,000 rpm |
| Sub-spindle | 6-inch chuck, 10 hp, 7,000 rpm |
| Milling head | 7.5 hp, 10,000 rpm, B-axis from -15° to 195° |
| Maximum machining diameter | 8.66 in |
| Maximum machining length | 22.8 in |
| Bar capacity | 2.2 in |
The main spindle accepts an 8-inch chuck and delivers 25 hp at up to 5,000 rpm. The sub-spindle uses a 6-inch chuck and provides 10 hp at up to 7,000 rpm, while the milling head offers 7.5 hp, 10,000 rpm and a B-axis range from -15 degrees to 195 degrees.
To assess stability in production, Protomatic uses wireless ball bar testing. The test creates circular motion between the spindle and milling axis parallel to the machine bed, evaluating repeat positioning capability at micron-level precision.
The machine also incorporates a Renishaw contact probe system and glass optical scales. Combined with periodic ball bar calibration, these measurement components are intended to support dimensional and positional accuracy for precision parts.
